Fruits of Hainan Island

To start this one off, I just wanna say, I went to the Beach today(Gulf of Tonkin, between Hainan Island and Vietnam) to go swimming, and it was a Lot of Fun! I went with Miss Wendy, Mr. Pan, their Son, and Yangwei. There were lots of Junks parked up on the Shore. I got some Photos, but they're not digital, so I have to wait to upload them until I can scan them to CD. We picked some very odd Fruits. When I first saw them, I thought they were Pineapples. But when we cut them open, much to my Surprise it was not a Pineapple at ALL! Nor was it anything delicious. When I got Home, I researched this, and I found this Website: SunnySanya. Apparently, it's a "Jackfruit". All of the Photos in this Blog are from that Site, you need not to click the Link, but to give them Recognition, I figured I should say that they are their Photos, not mine. Anyhow, apparently the Fruit is called Jackfruit. I remember seeing this Name at the Asian Market on Legacy, but I don't ever remember seeing this Fruit there...??
Anyhow, here are some of the Fruits of Hainan:
The Mango(芒果; mángguǒ), I'm sure you all know of the Mango...
It's sweet, with an Orange Inside and lots of Juice.

We also have Papaya(木瓜; mùguā)...
This one is a little less common in the US, but we do have it. It's sweet and has a yellow almost orange coloured Inside.

Next is the Lychee(荔枝; lìzhī)
One of my Favourites, this one has a white Fruit on the Inside which is kind of sweet, but Ciara describes the Taste best by saying the Way a Baby Wipe smells... hehe, but I really like it...

The next one is the Banana(香蕉; xiāngjiāo), and if you don't know what a Banana is, I should probably slap you, but I'm just going to not explain it...

We also have the Carambola/Starfruit(陽桃; yángtáo). This one lookes like a Star if you cut it across the Middle. It is yellow, and has a sometymes sweet/sometymes sour Taste. I don't like this one really... Although it is ok with Salt...

Next is the Wax Apple(蠟蘋果; làpíngguǒ). I actually haven't seen this one yet, but apparently it grows in the Winter, so I should see it sometyme soon...

Another one of my Favourites: The Dragonfruit/Pitaya(火龍果; huǒlóngguǒ). This one is purple and green, and you can easily peel the Skin off and eat the soft delicious sweet Fruit inside, it tastes like a Kiwi, but sweeter.

Next is the Rumbutan/Rambutan/Hairy Red Pellet Fruit(紅毛丹; hóngmáodān). This one has a white Fruit with Nuts inside. The Texture of the Fruit is just like the Lychee, but the Taste is very different.

The Betelnut(檳榔; bīnglang) here is like a Drug for the local People. I'm not sure how many People I talked to about this, but when I first came to Hainan, I thought the People had a terrible Illness. The Juice from this Fruit when prepared with a Plasterlike Substance is Blood red. So I saw what looked like People spitting up Blood everywhere... Anyhow, I tried it, and the Taste is absolutely terrible! It burns your Throat really bad, and I don't understand why the People here use it... But if you go anywhere in the Village, you can see old Women with Betelnut Stands selling them and preparing the Pasty white Stuff that they put on it. If you look at the Photo, you can see the white Pasty Stuff in the Bottle to her Left. The Betelnuts are the green Things and the Leaves are what she will apply the Paste to and fold it up and they will chew on it with the Shell of the Betelnut. The actual Fruit inside the Nut I believe is poisonnous and they do not eat it. They chew on the Shell.

Coconuts(椰子; yēzi) are EVERYWHERE here, so when walking around, you must be caerful because sometymes the Coconuts fall from the Trees and kill People. In Fact, a Student at my School had to be hospitalised because she was walking in one of the Chicken Gardens and a Coconut fell on her Head and split it open. Just the other Day I was in one of the Chicken Gardens with some Students taking Photos, and a Coconut came barreling out of a Tree and nearly killed my Friend. She was breathless and shaking afterwards, I thought it was funny. But it really is rather serious. Lol. You wouldn't believe this really until you hear the Noise a Coconut makes when it falls from the Tree. It's a loud enough Crash to wake someone up! Honestly it scared the Crap out of me when I just heard this loud BOOM out of nowhere! LOL. Anyhow, if you don't know what a Coconut is, you should learn...

Here is the Jackfruit(波羅蜜; bōluómì) that I explained above...

Next is the chinese Wampee(黄皮; huángpí). I've had this one Tyme a LONG Tyme ago at Wok n Roll on Merril and Hartsfield.

Guava(石榴; shíliu) is by far my favourite Fruit of all Tyme! It's pink inside with some black Seeds, and it is really really sweet! It's full of Fibre, so if you're a bit stopped up, eat some Guava... hehe

Mangosteen is another Fruit that you should already know... So I won't explain it, but here's a Photo anyhow...

There are many more Fruits on Hainan Island, but those are the most common one's that you would find growing somewhere...
